Even after many successful years practicing his craft, fourth-generation vigneron Michel Chignard claims to be a novice. He is a modest man, kind and courteous, but in every aspect of his winemaking one clearly sees his passion. This comes from old vines of Gamay (60 years old) and purely granitic soils. Drinking well today and benefits from decanting.

The Romans are often praised for their roads, aquaducts, and privies (and they gave us our calendar), but we also owe them a debt of gratitude for their prowess with a grapevine. Beaujolais lies along the Saone river valley, which once served as a Roman trade route 2000 years ago. And wherever the Romans travelled, they planted vines. Julienas is in fact named for Julius Caesar and produces wines known for their power and ageability. Beauvernay is a south-facing, 450 m high parcel of granite named for the verne trees (a kind of alder) along the banks of a nearby river. You find enticing aromas of raspberry, red currant, and a potpourri of cinnamon bark and violets, while on the palate it's full of bright, fresh black raspberries, cherries, and plums (stems and all) crushed on granite. It's a wine with a sense of place and history.
