Yemanueva Airén de Pie Franco, Bodega La Tercia - 2022

Item # 33774 750mL

The white Airén grape is an old variety from the La Mancha region, which is about an hour south of Madrid. This is a rare find, as the vines come from pre-Phylloxera (100-year-old) vines and the older the vines, the more complex the wine becomes. Dry and mineraled on the palate with aromas of yellow plums and flowers. Easy-drinking and especially easy with olives and cheese.

Staff Pick Notes

“I’m looking for a dry white wine around $12.00." If this is your quest today, here is a wine for you. The Spanish workhorse grape Airén is finally making a splash on the scene as a dry white wine. Could it be the old, gnarly pre-phylloxera vines that imbue this simple wine with special character not often seen in a wine at this price point? Airén is typically used for raisin production, brandy for the fortification of Sherry, and its seeds are pressed for grapeseed oil. The sturdy, drought-resistant grape is well-suited for growing in the hot, dry La Mancha DO. This easy-drinking wine has a subtle florality, piquant acidity, and gentle touch of stone fruit. Sit back, put your feet up and enjoy this little treat at home, or by the case at your next event!

Glossary

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. Spanish wine law focuses squarely on this issue: the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are highly regulated indicators of the amount of time a wine has aged prior to its release. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...
