Côte de Brouilly, Nicole Chanrion - 2022

Item # 34276 750mL

Ever since taking over the family domaine in 1988, Nicole Chanrion works all 6.5 hectares by herself, from pruning the vineyards and driving the tractors to winemaking and bottling, all without bravado or fanfare. In 2000 she became president of the Côte-de-Brouilly appellation, a position of respect and importance among peers. This comes from 50 year old Gamay vines planted in schist and porphyr-based soils.

Staff Pick Notes

Nicole Chanrion doesn't take no for an answer. And we're so glad that's the case. Although she's of the six generation in a wine making family, it was not easy in the 1970's for a woman to actually be the maker herself. By 2000 she was not only well respected, but became president of the Cote-de-Brouilly appellation! This particular wine showcases both the unique terroir (a prehistoric volcano lies beneath, providing a mineral-rich soil) and her craftsmanship (with a focus on biodynamic farming and minimal intervention in the vinification.) Cote-de-Brouilly is known as one of the more robust crus. Nicole's manages to balance both power and elegance. No wonder her local nickname is 'La Patronne de la Cote,' i.e. The Boss!

Beaujolais

Beaujolais is the classic expression of the Gamay grape. These red wines (labeled simply “Beaujolais”) are approachable, grapey, and fun – ideal for low-pressure sipping. Beaujolais-Villages is a step up. Compared to basic Beaujolais, the rules for Beaujolais-Villages wines are more strict. Villages wine is produced in far smaller quantities. Beaujolais Nouveau is perhaps the most gulpable wine made anywhere, and it should be drunk very soon after its release, which occurs each year on the...
