Ferdinando Zanusso and his son are impeccably expressing the great terroir of the Colli Orientali del Friuli and Collio growing districts. What distinguishes I Clivi from their peers are their devastatingly low yields, steep terrain, and old vines that range from sixty to eighty years of age. It is not surprising that their soils of calcareous clay, or ponca in local dialect.

This is a bright, vibrant white from the Colli Orientali del Friuli region in northeast Italy. I Clivi was founded by winemaker Ferdinando Zanusso and his son Mario. They're making incredible wines with soul that reflect the individuality of vines that are at least sixty years old. Whole-cluster bunches are hand-harvested and pressed very gently- comparative to Champagne level in order to extract a fine quality from the grapes. The precision is remarkable. This wine made from indigenous Ribolla Gialla leads with a burst of lemon and orange peel, and melds into honeycomb, apricot preserves and sage.There is a roundness to the texture that gives it dimension without a lot of weight. A wine to ponder early spring time if there ever was one.
