Best's "Great Western" Pinot Noir - 2019

The fruit for this wine comes from 1980 and 1987 Pinot Noir plantings in the Concongella vineyards, at Best’s Great Western. The estate is now run by 5th generation family member Ben Thompson. This is a delicious Pinot Noir with lithe red fruit that was aged in old oak barrels. An excellent choice for the table.

Sometimes the name of a wine says everything you need to know about it. Best's Great Western is just that. You can look, but you will be hard pressed to find a better Pinot Noir at this price point. Don't be fooled into thinking that this is a gimmicky new world wine with no sense of place. 2016 marks the 150th anniversary of this operation; it is one of Australia's oldest family owned estates. Many of their vines are quite old, pre-phylloxera & planted on original rootstocks. These grapes make a wine that is juicy, but not too ripe. It exhibits underlying spice, but is not overly oaked. Don't pass this bottle up, but if you do that's okay. Then there is more for Best's for me!
