Staff Pick Notes

As a blend of Cab Franc and Merlot, this red invites comparison to Bordeaux ("White Horse" is a sideways reference to Cheval Blanc, one of the 1er crus of St Emilion.) But the Finger Lakes have rapidly been developing into their own identity. Bloomer Creek, one of the few natural vignerons in New York (and my favorite NY winemaker), is halfway between the Right Bank and the wilder wines of the Loire Valley. Husband and wife team Kim Engle and Deb Bermingham have been farming organically since 1982. They are always experimenting and trying new things in the cellar, but the White Horse has always been a standout, speaking to terroir and vintage beautifully. The wine is energetic, fresh, with a rich nose of earthy sous-bois but full of dark, brambly fruit, the palate bringing in cedar, warm spices, and a tiny hit of smoke on the finish.
