Moscato Nero Secco, Biava - 2016

Item # 37098 750mL

This is an extraordinary, dry red Moscato from northern Italy and comes from a tiny property run by winemaker, Manuel Biava. Specifically, this is made from the Moscato di Scanzo grape variety which is native to the area. This is an unoaked, lively red wine that's aromatic, stony, salty, tannic and full of aromas of sage and incense. This is a new type of wine for Manuel as he's best-known for his delectable dessert wines.

Staff Pick Notes

Moscato (Muscat) is believed by many to be the oldest wine grape in the world. It was already revered in Greek and Roman times and was spread far and wide as these empires grew. Muscat is also one of the most diverse grapes, with over 200 varieties!!! It comes in many shades, is sometimes made fizzy or fully sparkling and runs the gamut from bone dry to unabashedly sweet. This particular incarnation is especially unique because it is vinified as a dry red wine. Signature floral and perfumed Muscat fragrances are certainly present, but you'll also detect some dried herbs, earth and mineral which tilt Biava's offering toward a savory style which can stand up to more than just the traditional meat and cheese board. But why choose? Start your meal with this and carry on through. A rare treat to be sure!
