Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Specogna - 2017

Item # 37318 750mL

Specogna is a 20 hectare estate located in northern Italy in Friuli. The estate was started in the 1960s and this bold red wine made from the local Refosco grape variety comes from vines planted as early as 1975. After a 20 day maceration then fermentation, the wine was aged in large, old French barrels. This Refosco is bold with very dark fruit aromas, lively acidity and tannins. Clearly a winner at the tableside.

Staff Pick Notes

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is part of the Refosco family. It distinguishes itself from the others because of its red stem. The wine produced has been enjoyed for centuries and according to research it was Augustus's wife Livia’s favorite wine! It has a deep color and black fruit flavors such as plums, blackberries, and almonds. It’s full-bodied and concentrated, slightly musky and herbaceous. It's an elegant and versatile wine that can be paired with many dishes, in particular red meat and game. Delicious!

Refosco

Refosco is actually the name of a group of red grape varieties - but as they produce wines that are nearly indistinguishable, the word "Refosco" is often used as if it were a single grape. Refoscos are medium- to full-bodied wines that are most often fruity, accessible and dry; on rare occasions, however, they can be still, off-dry, non-dessert reds.
