Pelaverga "Basadone", Castello di Verduno - 2021

Item # 37557 750mL

The castle of Verduno is a historic Piedmontese estate located in Verduno, the northernmost commune of Barolo. This is made from the Pelaverga grape and is a complex red wine full of savory spices and a lively tannin. "Basadone" is dialect for the poppy flower but doubles as a meaning for a "little kiss" as the locals believe that Pelaverga is indeed an aphrodisiac.

Staff Pick Notes

In the northernmost commune of Barolo, there are plantings of a truly magical grape called Pelaverga. Delicate and elegant, yet supremely aromatic, Pelaverga tantalizes the senses with a perfumed combination of juicy cherries, flowers, and spices. Smooth on the palate with ample acidity from the limestone soils, it is incredibly versatile with lighter fare (and for your next picnic)! With organic farming, minimum use of SO2, and native yeast fermentations, current winemaker Mario Andrion presents us with as authentic a taste of Verduno as there is. Fans of Ruchè, Grignolino, or even Rossese, this wine more than deserves to be part of your next gathering!
