Tasting Notes

The Excellence from this top Petite Champagne estate is in fact a single cask bottling from the 1992 vintage selected directly from the family's cellars. Due to the difficulty in declaring vintages for Cognac, the family decided to bottle under the Excellence label instead. Bottled to order in August of 2017, this Cognac had matured for a quarter century and the spirit now is currently in a perfect sweet spot between juicy, ripe fruits bursting with flavor and more structured and complex flavors derived from the decades in local oak barrels. The refinement that characterizes the Estève style is there in spades but there is no getting around it, this is a serious brandy that commands your attention. Notes include fresh clementines, hibiscus tea, candied ginger, dried mango, cherry pie, coconut layer cake, white pepper and a dry finish of savory tobacco. This is one we simply cannot get enough of.

Staff Pick Notes

I worry people see “Petite Champagne” and think Cognac from that region is inferior. This is not true, it is a different style to be sure, but one of equal worth to Grande Champagne. Chances are this 25 year old Cognac will seduce you with its bouquet alone: Orange peel, dried mango, fruit tea, cinnamon, and baked pastry dough. The palate offers sweet and savory flavors, clementines, juicy white cherries, kitchen spices, and wet tobacco. Drink this neat and tease out everything it has to offer. The brandy market offers a lot of fake gold from Grande Champagne. Jacques Estève’s Cognac passes the acid test.
