Another first release in the Rare Malts series, this is also the first release of any kind from this under the radar distillery since 2003 making this offering particularly exciting. Blair Athol has deep roots in the history of Scotch Whisky with the founding of the original site dating to 1798. The whisky opens up with the distillery's signature notes of spice, dates, sultanas with a layer of roasted meat and a hint of smoky sulphur. After a bit of time in glass the spirit evolves into decadent soft caramels, dark fudge, stewed autumn fruits with a lively flourish of fresh lime zest, sweet herbs, red tea and espresso laced chocolate on the long finish. Created in an edition of 5,514 bottles for the world from stocks aged in ex-bodega European oak sherry casks.

It's always a treat to see what Diageo has in its rare-release bag of goodies. One of the highlights of their recent batch is this remarkable 23-year-old single malt from Blair Anthol, an under-the-radar distillery whose whiskies are mostly used in blends. It's the first time Blair Athol has been included in this, and what a debut. Aged in ex-sherry European oak casks, this limited-edition, cask strength whisky shows aromas of raisins, caramel, baking spices, candied orange and dark chocolate. It's rich and round on the palate with both sweet and savory elements: fruit cake and toffee, baked apples, herbs, spices and mint. A superb bottle for sherry-aged whisky fans and collectors alike.

History:Distillation was brought to Scotland from Ireland by missionary monks in the 6th century.
