Tasting Notes

This is the first entry from this distillery in the Rare Malts series and it made it just in time to celebrate a major milestone; 200 years of distilling on the Coastal Highlands. Officially founded in 1817 Teaninich built its long term relevance on its steady output of highly regarded whiskies that have been put to use primarily in blends for centuries. Outside of the 12 year Flora and Fauna series from Diageo, single malt sightings have been very rare in recent years even from Independent bottlers and official releases non-existent. From spirit distilled in 1999, the stocks for this limited edition were matured in refill American oak hogsheads as well as first fill Bourbon barrels and bottled at a natural cask strength of 55.9% ABV. The whisky opens with textbook fruit at its core with glazed pears, lychees, and marinated orange peels accented by a crisp herbal grassiness. After a few minutes the whisky becomes more concentrated with deeper notes of vanilla, carmel apple, baking spice and freshly harvested grains. There is a distinctive oiliness on the palate with a medium body and lingering off-dry finish with autumn fruits and a hint of cracked pepper. A truly indulgent dram.
