Montlouis "Les Bournais" Sec, Chidaine - 2022

Item # 39509 750mL

Montlouis Les Bournais is a Chenin Blanc from vines planted on a limestone plateau overlooking the Loire river. The vineyard had been abandoned for some time, but Chidaine was convinced that it was one of the very best sites in Montlouis, and planted vines here first in 1999. A rich dry wine.

Staff Pick Notes

This is a somewhat gimme staff pick, because if you know and love Loire Chenin, then you know and love Chidaine. Francois and his wife Manuela have long been champions of natural viticulture in the Loire and make some of the finest Chenins around. Their philosophy focuses on what they call "regenerative agriculture", letting cover crops grow without tilling. The idea is to have the vines grow in concert with the natural vegetation, allowing for a deeper, truer expression of the land. The Les Bournais vineyard, which they describe as "magical" is a rare plateau of clay covered limestone, known as bournais. Enticing chalky aromas of white peach and citrus are followed on the palate by lime zest, apricot, herbs and grass. It's textured, saline and dense but lifted with Chenin's racy acidity. A truly outstanding wine.

Glossary

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Chenin Blanc

It produces just about any type of wine you can think of: ageworthy dessert wines; delicious, honeyed dry whites; sparklers; and even bases for fortified wines and spirits. These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly adopted winemaking technologies have helped a dedicated group of producers to bring the country's dry...
