Alexander and Maria Koppitsch began making wine in Burgenland in 2011. They took over their parents 5.5-hectare winery and moved from selling their grapes into making their own wine. They farm biodynamically and by hand with minimal intervention. This red wine is a blend of grapes from parcels across their estate. Easy drinking with plenty of juicy cranberry and raspberry flavors that beg for a second glass. Best enjoyed with a light chill.

Weingut Koppitsch has been in the family for 500 years. In 2011, it was Alex and Maria Koppitsch's turn to run the place. From the very beginning they devoted themselves to the goal of making joyfully delicious natural wines. No additives (including sulfur) are ever added and farming is organic and biodynamic. Winemaking is strictly non interventionist. They currently offer 13 labels unified in their natural approach. Their Rét is a part of their “fun” series ('nuff said). An impressive tapestry of aromas of spice, black pepper, mineral, tea, pineapple, and cassis waft in the glass. The palate shows brisk acidity, freshness, and a vivacious energy. It’s surely a wine to share when you want to spread some Koppitsch joy.

Blaufränkisch

Germans call it Lemberger, Austrians call it Blaufränkisch; let's call the whole thing off. What's important is that this black grape variety produces spicy wines with good tannins and firm acidity, similar to one of the crus of Beaujolais; in fact, until recently, Blaufränkisch was believed to be Gamay. These are often ageworthy wines, and they're some of the best things coming out of Austria these days.
