Abouriou, Côtes du Marmandais, Elian Da Ros - 2019

Item # 40467 750mL

Historically, the region around Marmande has been more famous for tomatoes than for wine, but Elian Da Ros might change all that. The local local Abouriou grape produces a lighter style of red wine with a peppery characteristic and bright, chappy red fruit. It drinks especially well with a light chill.

Staff Pick Notes

When I smelled this wine I thought, "This smells like Beaujolais." Which is kind of crazy, since the Southeast of France is more known for big, rustic wines that call to mind stews or turkey legs rather than lithe little summer reds. This wine isn't made from gamay; instead, it's from a fun little grape called abouriou. Extensive DNA testing has revealed the two aren't related, but I can see why scientists thought the grapes may be siblings. Abouricou surprised me with it's light body, bright, unripe red berry fruit and minimal tannins. An easy wine to drink with snacks, veggies or a light meal, I'd also be happy to drink this with a chill.
