Tim Smith, Mataro - 2021

Item # 40864 750mL

A blend of fruit from 3 different vineyards with 3 distinct soil types. The low-yielding vines range up to 130 years old. The Kalimna block (130 yrs old) is grey sandy soil, almost like a beach. This provides great fragrance and perfume. The wine is aged in large, old barrels.

Staff Pick Notes

Tim Smith is a rock star winemaker, figuratively and literally! Formerly a roadie for many of Australia’s greatest rock bands during the 80s, Smith resigned himself to work in the wine industry to support his family and live a more stable lifestyle. While in Rhone during a harvest with a bottle of Viognier in hand, he decided this would be the work he would dedicate the rest of his life to. Sourcing grapes from Barossa and Eden Valley, this plush and fresh Mataro (Australia’s name for Mouvedre) shows spectacularly with punchy flavors and rounded, supple tannins. Aged in old French oak allows the wine to breathe and speak truthfully, displaying aromas of fatty smoked brisket, black pepper, and dried tobacco and flavors of black olive, blackberry bramble with a soft oregano finish. This wine is rocking and rolling.

The climate of South Australia’s McLaren Vale district is heavily influenced by the ocean; wines here typically show savory notes of olive and spice on the nose and deep berry flavors on the palate....
