Tasting Notes

Capitan Fanegas is the personal project of Mario Ruiz Clavijo inside the family winery: Bodegas Marques de Arviza. The wine shows intense red and black fruits from tempranillo, combined with delicate floral aromas typical of the Graciano variety. Oak barrel aging for 16 months.

Staff Pick Notes

Mario Ruiz-Clavijo's wines are considered "vinos de author," which technically means they don't follow regular DO rules, but in spirit they are wines meant to express creative freedom, a personal statement straight from the heart of the winemaker. I like to think of them in a more literary sense, as wines with a unique voice, like poetry or a post-modern novel. In this case Mario's intention was to make wines expressing the unique terroir of some of the top plots from his family's winery in Rioja. This bottling is a blend of 85% Tempranillo 15% Graciano and aged in oak for 12 months. The oak is subtle, however, mostly you'll find ripe blackberry, raspberry, & rose petals. It's medium bodied, with nice acidity, and smooth tannins, an all around enjoyable wine to curl up on the couch with and sip while reading Don Quixote.

In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the...

Tempranillo

A.k.a. Cencibel. Just about synonymous with Spanish wine, the red Tempranillo grape has now fully won over the hearts and minds of critics and amateur oenophiles all over the world. The best bottles are powerful and ageworthy, and are beginning to fetch prices you'd never have expected from Spanish wines just a few years ago. Tempranillo is often used in blends with Bordeaux grapes such as...

Rioja

The origin of Spanish winemaking, Rioja has been the benchmark for Spanish wines in the international market for over two hundred years, and remains so to this day. Tempranillo is the star of the red wines here, though its expression can vary wildly from producer to producer. Traditionally-styled Riojas tend to be subtle and soft, and often have high levels of acidity to ensure their survival...
