We're big fans of all the wines from this estate, Château Peybonhomme-Les-Tours, in Bordeaux. This is a lively Merlot (40-year-old vines) that comes from chalk and clay-based soils and was made without the addition of sulphur. The tannins are smooth and accessible.

These days Merlot seems to occupy two extreme camps in the eyes of consumers. It’s either an expensive old world Grande Dame that needs to “age properly,” or bargain bin plonk. Happily, this is not the case. Peybonhomme has always made wines that taste far better than their prices would suggest. Their “Les Cousines” Merlot has verve and surprising depth of character. The fruit is concentrated, taut, and dry. The acidity and tannins play quiet supporting roles so you can focus on the primary flavors. As you smack you lips you’ll notice the finish is slightly savory with notes of crushed pepper. Don’t let the caricatures dissuade you. There’s a myriad of great Merlot in-between the extremes.
