Handgemenge Rotes, Wachter-Wiesler - 2018

Item # 43173 750mL

Now that our priorities are changing, so are our habits for drinking wine. This too is for those less fussy days of just needing a great wine that we can open and enjoy. If you care to take this a step further, you can rest-assured that this is from the excellent Austrian winery, Wachter-Wiesler, located in the southern part of Burgenland. Christophe Wachter began working at his family winery in 2008 and took over two years later at age 22.

Staff Pick Notes

A solid, light-bodied wine with enough acidity to provide energy. Notes of crushed, tangy red berries with the vine still on. And perhaps best of all this is a wine that doesn't demand anything from you. No pondering or brooding required, unless you're into that. It's just a pleasant wine to open on a weeknight that will complement a range of foods. Made by Christoph Wachter, a prodigy winemaker from Austria's Burgenland region, who started at twenty-two with the mindset to let things be. He allows weeds to grow on the vineyards to aid biodiversity and instead of using fertilizer he favors allowing the vines to get what they need from the rich soils composed of green schist and limestone. The end results speak for themselves. Wachter-Wiesler is on to something good here.

It has risen to fame in its homeland and beyond, and now is the single most widely grown red grape variety in Austria. Offering some of the best attributes of both its parents, Zweigelt is very resistant to frost (an important trait to have when growing in chilly Austria) and ripens relatively early. It combines the...
