Grüner Veltliner Leithaberg "Ladisberg," Markus Altenburger - 2017

Item # 43426 750mL

The Ladisberg vineyard is home to plantings of 50 year old Grüner Veltliner on a shell and limestone hill. Spontaneous fermentation was in concrete eggs and neutral barrels. The Leithaberg region takes its name from range of low mountains that are, in fact, the tapering end of the Alps, crowning the western edge of Lake Neusiedl. It is home to the recently created Leithaberg DAC which is located in Austria's far eastern edge, a half hour from Vienna. Markus's approach to viticulture strongly follows the late, great farmer Masanobu Fukuoka who taught the "do nothing if possible" approach.

Staff Pick Notes

By now, biodynamic farming may be firmly planted on your radar, so it's time to introduce the philosophy into the vineyard. The Fukuoka Method, named after Masanobu Fukuoka, is also referred to as "natural farming" or "do-nothing farming" and has been in practice since the 1930s. With this philosophy a farmer pretty much does nothing—no tilling or plowing, no pesticides or herbicides (even natural ones), no fertilizers, and no weeding. Many winemakers have followed in Fukuoka's footsteps, including Markus Altenburger who produces stellar reds like Blaufränkisch and Neuberger, as well as some outstanding old-vine Grüner Veltliner. His Ladisberg Grüner is deeply colored and richly textured. Apple cider and quince paste leap out of the glass with wisps of sweet spice dancing amongst yellow flowers.

Glossary

Grüner Veltliner

Referred to by many Americans as "Gru-Ve," this white variety is nearly synonymous with Austrian wine. It's becoming wildly popular at the moment, especially compared to its obscure origins: it's known as the ultimate food wine for its great minerality and appealing freshness. The wines are consistent and eminently drinkable at the low end, and, on the premium side of things, full-bodied, long-lived, world-class whites.

Austria

Austrian wine is finally getting the attention it deserves. Ever since the late 1980s, Austrian winemaking has taken a much more rigorous approach to quality control, and returned to its roots in organic viticulture.Deservedly famous for its white wines (Grüner Veltliners especially), Austria makes a number of delicious red wines as well. The most widely grown red grape in Austria is Zweigelt (a.k.a. Blauer Zweigelt), which yields full-bodied wines, deep in color and featuring bold flavors of...
