Brutal, Calcarius - 2019

Item # 43547 750mL

A vibrant red wine made the Nero di Troia grape. Dark, pulpy fruit flavors and electric acidity make this a great pairing for cured and roasted meats, sharp cheeses and hearty stews. Fermented in stainless steel tank with native yeast, bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur added.

Staff Pick Notes

If you peruse the natural wine shelves of shops across the country you're bound to come across a few Brutal labels sooner or later. These don't come from one producer, but act as a beacon to natural wine drinkers and makers. Theoretically it should be the wildest, funkiest, most Brutal wine that the winemaker produces. Story goes that the idea was hatched at Bar Brutal in Barcelona, as a challenge to their natural winemaking friends. Brutal wines are zero-zero: nothing added, nothing taken out. Unfined, unfiltered, unsulfured and fermented with wild yeasts. Brutal Calcarius from Puglia is made from Nero di Troia. It is inky, light, yet structured. Crushed violets and brambly forest fruits dominate the palate with a fine underlying minerality. Fresh, exciting, brutal!!! (In the best way possible.)
