Ricca Terra "Bullets Before Cannonballs" Red Blend - 2021

Item # 43873 750mL

From the Riverland area of South Australia where the Murray River keeps the warm climate more temperate allowing for more freshness in wines. This is a lively red blend. Full bodied and tannic yet very balanced. It comes from Ash and Holly Ratcliffe. Although they're newer vintners in the area, they seek out older vines and ultimately wines you can drink unabashedly.

Staff Pick Notes

Ashley Ratcliff is an excellent winemaker that decided to explore the use of different (not native) grapes in Riverland, Australia. The grape varieties used in this blend are Tempranillo, Lagrein, Aglianico and Shiraz. The last one is the only native one. The producer used grapes planted in different soils and the grapes are hand pruned and hand harvested. The grapes showed a great potential where they were planted and the result is noticeable in this very pleasant wine. Blackberry and spice notes are followed by tobacco and a smooth savoury finish. Great with red sauce pasta or soft cheeses. A great example of New World Wine!

The best bottles are powerful and ageworthy, and are beginning to fetch prices you'd never have expected from Spanish wines just a few years ago. Tempranillo is often used in blends with Bordeaux grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and has lately been grown with considerable success outside of Spain, in...

Australia

Australian Shiraz (made from the grape called “Syrah” in other parts of the world) shows the essence of the outback: it’s big, bold, and a little rough around the edges. The vast country leaves lots of room for variation, however, with its many terroirs each yielding distinctively styled wines. The climate of South Australia’s McLaren Vale district is heavily influenced by the ocean; wines here typically show savory notes of olive and spice on the nose and deep berry flavors on the palate....
