Staff Pick Notes

I love high acid white wine. Riesling, Assyrtiko, Chenin Blanc, Muscadet, Chablis--I just can't get enough of that crisp, refreshing, mouthwatering goodness. Not to be outdone is Spain's high acid champion, Albariño. This Spanish gem of a grape has thick skins and is disease resistant, meaning it can thrive in Galicia's humid, rainy, oceanic climate. Often planted in sandy soils near the ocean, the resulting wines often display notes of salinity. This La Milla bottling from Viños de Terruños is textbook, classic Albariño: ripe citrus and stone fruit, refreshing acidity, stony minerality, and is just to die for. Pair with shellfish, crab-crusted cod, or pan-asian cuisine.

Rías Baixas

Located on the Northeast coast of Spain, just north of the Portuguese border, Rías Baixas is home to the famed white grape varietal Albariño. These deliciously refreshing whites typically offer aromas of peach, apricot, and melon, backed by a steely minerality and a lean, crisp finish.

Albariño

The primary grape of the Rías Baixas (Lower Inlets) section of the Galicia region of northwestern Spain, Albariño is considered by many to be Spain's premier white wine. It also plays an important role in northern Portugal (where it is known as Alvarinho) as a component of Vinho Verde. The thick-skinned grapes thrive in the cool, windy climates of Galicia and northern Portgual, yielding intensely aromatic wines with typical aromas of almonds, white flowers, and stone fruits; the best examples...
