Sumol "Litrona", Clos Lentiscus - 2018

Item # 43915 1 L

The greater area of Cataluña is located in the northeast of Spain and this is where the Sumoll grape is found. Typically found in blends, this is a fascinating find as it's entirely made from this native grape that is wrapped up in freshness with delicious, chalky minerals. Fermented in old foudre and amphorae with native yeasts. Zero sulphur was added.

Staff Pick Notes

There are obscure, geeky wine grapes and then there's Sumoll. There are probably less than 200ha being cultivated globally, as it's only now beginning to recover from near extinction in the 1950s and mostly gets blended. The fantastic wines of Els Jelipins are based in the grape and for a long time I assumed they would be my only chance to taste it. I was genuinely surprised and excited to see this new liter on our shelves, and I bought a bottle immediately. I was rewarded for taking that chance. A lighter, brighter style of red, it matches gorgeously tart red fruit with the lightest touch of barnyard funk and wild herbs; crunchy, juicy, and spritzy on opening but really complex and dense at its core. I recommend it for lovers of Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo, or Nerello Mascalese!

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. Spanish wine law focuses squarely on this issue: the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are highly regulated indicators of the amount of time a wine has aged prior to its release.
