Tasting Notes

The Forstreiter family has been making wine since 1868, but it has been the current owner and winemaker, Meinhard Forstreiter, who has brought the vineyard to a new level of quality and reputation. The vineyard is situated in Krems-Hollenburg in the Kremstal, along the right bank of the Danube River, across from the Wachau. St, Laurent is a local red grape that is medium-bodied but with a finesse similar to Pinot Noir.

Staff Pick Notes

Of Austria's 3 principal red grapes Sankt Laurent is the least common (less than 3% of total vines planted). It's finicky, thin skinned, and difficult. A spike or drop in temperature can ruin the yield significantly. In short, it's not an easy profit. In spite of this, when properly cultivated it can produce exceptional, uniquely Austrian wines at a superb value. The Forstreiter family has been making wines in the Kremstal region since the mid-nineteenth century. Vineyards are along the right bank of the Danube river in a region where winemaking dates back to the Roman Empire. This Sankt Laurent reserve is a fantastic vintage. It's accessible, balanced, and has a silky, buttery texture that is just sublime. Notes of dark berries, roses, cinnamon. Fans of Cru Beaujolais, you've found a kindred spirit.
