Henri Billiot, Vintage Brut - 2014

Item # 15011 750mL

Grand Cru Pinot Noir Champagne from a tiny estate in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay where Pinot Noir vines dominate any blend. At the helm is Laetitia Billiot, the fourth generation to estate bottle at this domaine. A fine vintage made from a mix of older vines and from select parcels all of which are in the most desirable mid slope of the hills. Full-bodied on the palate and drinking well today. Pair with a lobster bisque.

Staff Pick Notes

In my book there's no such thing as too much Champagne. No need to wait for special occasions or fancy dinner parties. Yes, they may be a little pricier, but life is too darn short. And when it comes to bubbles, pound for pound, the return is so much greater. Not to mention the quality and complexity of bottles coming from small, family-run grower-producers like Laetitia Billiot. She took over from her father in 2011, and has a mere 5 ha of vineyards in Ambonnay. Impressively, they are all Grand Cru. Her 2009 is 70/30 Pinot Noir/Chardonnay and shows the vinous density of the terroir and the structure of that vintage. All of the wines are fermented in enameled steel tanks, do not go through malo and are neither fined nor filtered. Rich and spicy with juicy ripe red fruit and a citric edge, the depth and complexity go on for days.

Glossary

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Here one finds renditions of Pinot Noir that deliver power with finesse and grace, wines that have unimaginable depth of flavor, yet are perfectly balanced and ephemeral in the mouth - in short, wines that deliver all that Pinot Noir has to offer. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Champagne

Champagne is finally getting the recognition it deserves as a brilliant food wine. For consistency and quality, turn to the big Champagne brands and you’ll never go wrong. Remember that “Non-Vintage” (NV) is not a dirty word here: NV Champagnes are blends of wines from the best growing seasons. But if you can find one, try a Champagne made by a Grower-Producer. These winemakers control every aspect of grape cultivation and vinification, from the vine to the finished bottle, which is...

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
