Tasting Notes

From high in the Italian Dolomites comes this delightful Pinot Grigio. With its signature notes of white fruits and flowers. The Abbazia di Novacella winery was founded by monks as a monastery in the 12th Century and naturally, monks and non-monks alike need their wine.

Staff Pick Notes

The palates of many people have been jaded by Pinot Grigio. It is often viewed as a ubiquitous grape making the inexpensive, happy hour, ladies' night kind of Pinot Grigio that is totally fine, but certainly nothing to write home about. But this!! Abbazia di Novacella deserves a string of exclamation points, but I'll refrain because there is SO MUCH more to say. The estate ranks among the world's oldest active wineries. Grapes have been cultivated here since the 1100s. The vineyards are located on the steep slopes of the Dolomites, offering hot summer days, but cool nights that render mouth watering acidity in the wines. This is a serious Pinot Grigio with depth, power, and minerality (& this is just the entry level bottling). It may cost a bit more than others but when you taste it, you'll know EXACTLY why. Get out your postcards.

The swath of land was returned to Italy after World War I, and the two regions have been lumped together in the winemaking world ever since. Alto-Adige, the northernmost half of the region, retains great pride in its Germanic heritage,...

Alto Adige

Comprising the northern half of the oft-conjoined Trentino/Alto-Adige region of Northern Italy, Alto-Adige is in fact its own entity with its own distinct style of winemaking. Situated on the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, the two autonomous regions were returned to Italy after World War I (hence why they are often lumped together). Alto-Adige retains great pride in its Germanic...

Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio is an Italian synonym for the French Pinot Gris variety, but many more people have had Pinot Grigio than a Pinot Gris. At its most basic level, the grape produces varietals that are smooth and easy to drink, and perfect with a huge range of dishes that just beg to be paired with a fresh white wine. There is an entire spectrum of Pinot Gris/Grigio, however, the best of them being...
