Tasting Notes

Flavio Fanti, owner of the family estate La Palazzetta, represents one of Montalcino's elite sources of limited-production Brunello, a full-bodied red wine that comes in many shapes and sizes. His ten acres of Sangiovese Grosso in picturesque Castelnuovo dell'Abate is home to several of the zone's finest parcels.

Staff Pick Notes

La Palazzetta is a family-run winery comprising 18 hectares in the southeast of the Montalcino DOC appellation. I see this wine as an artisanal Brunello di Montalcino. Indeed, Flavio Fanti, the man behind La Palazzetta, ensures that his wines are a pure representation of the place where they grow. Flavio uses large Slovenian and French oak that gently caresses the fruit without taking advantage of it. This Brunello di Montalcino shows the full potential of the Sangiovese grape, putting the delicate fruits of the grape in the first wave, and keeping the tannin and acidity in a second smoother wave. A Brunello that inspires exploration.

Sangiovese has shown itself in recent years to be an excellent...

Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most complex expressions of Sangiovese, has the best aging potential. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows the softer side of the grape, containing up to 20% of other varieties. Young Chianti often smells of fresh...
