A portion of the Clos de la Cure vines are situated on the Saint Christophe des Bardes plateau in a beautiful walled vineyard and the rest lie on the plateau of Saint Etienne de Lisse. The vineyards share the same soil composition as Château Cheval Blanc – gravel and clay with iron-rich deposits – and they are densely planted at 6600-9000 vines per hectare. The Bouyer family is committed to farming ecologically with great respect for the Grand Cru terroir.

Have you studied the classics? My alma mater keeps trying to remind me that the great books are relevant, but today I'm more inclined to reflect on the great wines. At Astor we've got the full spectrum of terroir but this is one of the ones that made wine famous. Then again, if you're like me, you have little attention for anything predictable and the starting price of decent Bordeaux is not a thrilling prospect, hence the half bottle. It's the right size for a solo gourmand having a bloody steak, and the smaller format catalyzes evolution so this tastes more mature than the same vintage would in a full-size bottle. This wine gives me what I expect from St.-Emilion, which is to say pure pleasure: a rich red fruit profile flexes coffee and chocolate notes when served with seared beef. An education, too.
