Staff Pick Notes

"There are no common wines in Vosne." So wrote an abbée back before the French Revolution. Even then the wines of this small village were highly prized (not surprising given that winemaking here dates back to 890 AD.) Today it's home to some of the most expensive wines in the world: Romanée -Conti, La Tache, Richebourg. Domaine Forey was founded in 1840, and is now run by Régis Forey the founder’s great great grandson. Since 1995 Regis has diminished the use of sulphur, partially destems, and has his wines undergo a short, cold maceration, making them more concentrated and muscular than those of his father, Jean. The 2015 is still young (decant if you open now), but there’s plenty of pleasure to be found: lots of cherry, raspberry with hints of forest floor and spice. A wine uncommonly good.

Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Fans of rich, unctuous, and well-oaked Chardonnay will enjoy Chassagne-Montrachet, whose age-worthy offerings offer all the fatness of a California wine, yet retain a very Burgundian, mineral-driven core and great acidity....
