Staff Pick Notes

Montlouis Brut Nature, Méthode Traditionelle, Chidaine

This year, I've been on the hunt for the perfect holiday sparkling wine, and I must say that this dry Chenin Blanc from Chidain may be the winner. This bubbly is produced biodynamically in Touraine, in the Loire Valley of France. The vines grow in a base of limestone and chalk overlaid with clay and two kinds of flint, "Les Perruches" and "Les Aubois." The combination of soil types lends a backbone of minerality to the wine's structure. The 2015 vintage has warm notes of baked apples, honey, nutmeg and toasty brioche. The deep golden hue of the wine is reminiscent of autumn leaves and candlelight. This is a beautiful sparkling wine for autumn and winter evenings, and would be an excellent choice for holiday parties, either as an apertif or throughout an entire meal.

These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly adopted winemaking technologies have helped a dedicated group of producers to bring the country's dry...
