Albariño, Do Ferreiro - 2022

Item # 21583 750mL

This 5 hectare estate is one of the best in Rías Baixes. Winemaker Gerardo Mendez's vines are 50 years old at least, with one parcel of over 200 year old vines. The depth and minerality of this crisp, citric, and slightly petrol-y Albariño is stunning and truly places it a cut above the rest.

Staff Pick Notes

Nestled in the Salnes subzone in the heart of the Rías Baixas, Gerardo Mendez farms over 175 tiny plots of vines by hand. Aided by the coastal influence, while remaining protected by mountain ranges allows for brilliant Albariño to be crafted in this optimal climate setup. As part of the original coalition to enhance the quality of the region and assist it in gaining its original denomination, Mendez was a key figure whose quality winemaking and wonderful generosity have made him a leader in the region. This Albariño, a blend of vine plots between 15 and 50 years old, is striking--full of crisp honeydew melon and lemon, underlined by a saline and petrol foundation. Firm acid and an almost "crunchy" mineral profile with pure stone fruit make this an Albariño with complexity, freshness, and vivaciousness, a forthcoming wine for sure.

In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Rías Baixas

Located on the Northeast coast of Spain, just north of the Portuguese border, Rías Baixas is home to the famed white grape varietal Albariño. These deliciously refreshing whites typically offer aromas of peach, apricot, and melon, backed by a steely minerality and a lean, crisp finish.

Albariño

The primary grape of the Rías Baixas (Lower Inlets) section of the Galicia region of northwestern Spain, Albariño is considered by many to be Spain's premier white wine. It also plays an important role in northern Portugal (where it is known as Alvarinho) as a component of Vinho Verde. The thick-skinned grapes thrive in the cool, windy climates of Galicia and northern Portgual, yielding intensely aromatic wines with typical aromas of almonds, white flowers, and stone fruits; the best examples...
