Certified Organic

Wine made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in the vineyard. Certified in the country of origin.

Tasting Notes

This succulent Riesling is full of refreshing stone fruit notes on the nose and palate. The wine has a touch of residual sugar and is balanced and round in the mouth. The wine spends time in old, neutral barrels which gives it a rounder, supple texture. Ch. Montelena has been making Riesling since Jim Barret took over the estate in 1972.

Staff Pick Notes

The idea of a cold weather grape such as Riesling being grown in California of all places is a cause to halt and question how that even possibly would translate into bottling. Apparently pretty well as Chateau Montelena has been growing the grape in Napa since the 1970s where Riesling dominated the landscape even more so than Chardonnay. This Riesling is a delectable offering without being cloying as they can sometimes be, boasting juicy orange, peach and pineapple notes balanced with a zesty minerality and fresh acidity. Elegant yet powerful in its finish with a blissful peck of sweetness, this offers an honesty of fruit that emphasizes the nature and nobility of this varietal.

Tubbs planted his...

Astor's Glossary of Terms

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Riesling

Though the trend is now in the other direction, for many years Riesling was known for producing wines with little alcohol and some residual sugar - too sweet for many modern wine drinkers. Though it's now cultivated worldwide, Riesling is nearly synonymous with German wine, and that country's winemakers have lately begun to produce some very exciting dry versions. They are careful to retain the...
