Staff Pick Notes

I’ve been on the lookout for the arrivals of the top 2021 German Rieslings. This is the first vintage in years that the cooler weather helped form classic German wines of crisp, mineral driven elegance. When this bottle from the great Clemens Busch arrived, I couldn’t wait to take it home. The grapes are grown on the renowned Marienburg vineyard, which sits on a dangerously steep hillside that faces southeast. It boasts three sections whose soil is composed of 3 differently colored slate (gray, blue, and red). The red slate that nourishes this wine gives it the spice and richness that you smell and taste. It’s a bit more linear and focused than in years past. It has a mélange of aromas and flavors that are beautifully harmonious. You might find roses, roasted pears, pineapple, and tangerine amongst its flavors.

Riesling

Though the trend is now in the other direction, for many years Riesling was known for producing wines with little alcohol and some residual sugar - too sweet for many modern wine drinkers. Though it's now cultivated worldwide, Riesling is nearly synonymous with German wine, and that country's winemakers have lately begun to produce some very exciting dry versions. They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...
