Schiava "Elda", Nusserhof - 2015

Item # 21693 750mL

A delicate and summery light-colored red wine from one of our favorite tiny producers whose estate is virtually inside the beautiful city of Bolzano. Smoky and redolent of cranberries, if this isn't the most delicious Schiava you've had, we'll be very surprised.

Staff Pick Notes

Schiava! This beautiful and offbeat red from the Nusserhof estate is much more than meets the eye. From a historic winery nestled in what is now the city of Bolzano, we are gifted this exceptional and genuinely surprising wine. Mostly composed of Schiava, with some Lagrein, Merlot, and an unidentified mix of both red and white grapes, this is atypical for the Alto-Adige. Earthy and smoky, with red fruits emerging after some air time, and a structure that allows for further aging, this is surely a wild wine! If you enjoy red Burgundy that is on the earthy side, then I would highly recommend this Elda with some roasted game, smoked pork, and root vegetables. Cool climate reds-hell yes!

Crossing the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, Trentino-Alto-Adige is in fact comprised of two autonomous regions (Trentino and Alto-Adige). The swath of land was returned to Italy after World War I, and the two regions have been lumped together in the winemaking world ever since. Alto-Adige, the northernmost half of the region, retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. The region is most famous for its...

Situated on the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, the two autonomous regions were returned to Italy after World War I (hence why they are often lumped together). Alto-Adige retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. Alto-Adige is most...
