It's miraculous that a bottle of AJ Adam’s Dhroner Hofberg contains so much goodness while bearing such a modest price tag. The fruit comes from a plot that's been in the family for generations. Yet the Hofberg estate was abandoned by AJ's parents (they moved to more urban pastures). Andreas, with the help of his sister Barbara, decided to restore the plot. They reworked the 30-65-year-old vines that cover a steep, southwest-facing slope of gray slate. The wine is packed with flavors of pear, pineapple, citrus, nutmeg, and beeswax. These flavors are accompanied by cleansing acidity and crunchy, graphite-like minerality. It is rich, complex, and balanced. I hesitate to share this secret with you, but then wine is all about sharing. Just don’t yell at me if this wine does a Burgundy-like jump in price in future vintages.
