Chiroubles, Damien Coquelet - 2020

Item # 22346 750mL

Damien Coquelet has produced a standout Chiroubles in the world of Beaujolais. His first vintage was in 2007 when he was just 20 years old. Needless to say, he learned through everything from his stepfather, Georges Descombes. Damien owns 9 ha of vines planted in granite and decomposed schist. Chiroubles is the smallest of the Crus in the region.

Staff Pick Notes

It is not an overstatement to say, this perennial release from Damien Coquelet's two hectares of Chiroubles is art in a bottle. Much credit is given to his upbringing; as the stepson of Georges Descombes, Damien grew up with his hands deep in the soil of Beaujolais and produced the innagural vintage of his estate at just 20 years old. His production begins with whole-cluster, semi-carbonic maceration for 10 to 12 days. After resting in the cellars, the wine is bottled unfined/unfiltered with no added So2; released 18 months after harvest. Subtle and seductive fruit notes of overripe raspberry and orange peels prevail. Leading to a complex earthy quality of wet leaves and wet rock. This showstopping expression, from the smallest producing Cru of Beaujolais is not to be missed!

Beaujolais-Villages is a step up. Compared to basic Beaujolais, the rules for Beaujolais-Villages wines are more strict. Villages wine is produced in far smaller quantities. Beaujolais Nouveau is perhaps the most gulpable wine made anywhere, and it should be drunk very soon after its release, which occurs each year on the...
