Staff Pick Notes

In my travels to Uruguay, I was introduced to a national hero—Tannat. This wine grape made such a great impact on me that I fell for it from the first glass. Then I took a deep dive and studied its roots and birthplace. I discovered that Tannat originated in the heart of Gascony, in Southwest France. Jean-Marc Laffitte, owner of Château Laffitte-Teston, began bottling wine from his family's domain in 1975. He makes Tannat shine in this bottle. Pair this with anything from the grill, especially pork chops, chorizo, and grilled asparagus.

Glossary

Terroir

“Terroir” means earth or soil in French. In the wine world, terroir refers to the physical conditions of a region, a vineyard site, or any parcel of vine-populated land. Terroir is the interplay between soil and climate and the impact of these elements on a wine.
