Grüner Veltliner “Fumberg”, Wimmer Czerny - 2020

Item # 23166 750mL

The approach to winemaking at the Wimmer Czerny estate is highly respectful to future generations. The fruit is hand-harvested and the grapes are fermented with native yeasts. This is an elegant, dry white wine which is aromatic and fuller bodied on the palate.

Staff Pick Notes

Drinking this wine was a pleasant experience of discovery. On the nose and palate there is a cocktail of stone fruit which is moderately dry. It was not a great match for my grilled salmon on night 1. But I gave a it try on night 2 and found it to be the perfect complement to lightly breaded and fried haddock with steamed vegetables. That little extra airing made a big difference. In fact the wine had evolved to show lovely lemon zest and a nice backbone. I would have expected a wine initially soft to have gotten flabby, but it got tighter and more delightful. Use it with not- too-heavy fried foods and it will not let you down.

The hilly, austere region is distinctive because of its deep soils composed of loess - a soft, friable type of soil capable of bringing stunning levels of minerality...

Austrian wine is finally getting the attention it deserves. Ever since the late 1980s, Austrian winemaking has taken a much more rigorous approach to quality control, and returned to its roots in organic viticulture.Deservedly famous for its white wines (Grüner Veltliners especially), Austria makes a number of delicious red wines as well. The most widely grown red grape in Austria is Zweigelt (a.k.a. Blauer Zweigelt), which yields full-bodied wines, deep in color and featuring bold flavors of...
