Els Jelipins Red - NV

Item # 23885 750mL

As little intervention as possible is the mantra of Glòria Garriga & Oriol Illa, winemakers at Els Jelipins. They live and work as close to nature with their daughter sharing with the world, through this wine, their beliefs in minimalist winemaking. This red blend is balanced and intense with defined red fruits, kirsch aromas and hints of balsam and flowers. It ends with silky tannins and has great potential for aging.

Staff Pick Notes

There's not a lot of this wine (2000 bottles in this vintage) and there probably never will be. Glòria Garriga and daughter Berta started making wine out of the family barn in 2003, and while demand for their wines has gone wild in recent years (and they've been able to upgrade those facilities), they are unwilling to compromise on meticulous, natural production or bring on additional workers. The red is a 60/40 blend of Sumoll and Garnacha. If you don't recognize Sumoll, it's because there are barely 100ha of the nearly extinct grape left in the world. The nose is mature, maybe reminding you of a Burgundy that's finally ready to drink, and a touch balsamic. On the palate, both textured and bright, it matches dried cherry fruit and tangy tamarind gummies, brown sugar, and oak spice. A rare and unique wine, one of true complexity.

Glossary

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. Spanish wine law focuses squarely on this issue: the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are highly regulated indicators of the amount of time a wine has aged prior to its release. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Grenache

The Grenache grape (a.k.a. Grenache Noir) produces relatively pale, fruity red wines that often stop just short of sweetness. Grenache is familiar to most wine drinkers as an ingredient in the blends of the Rhône and Languedoc-Roussillon, where it can add charm to varieties that are a little rougher around the edges. The distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations are both characterized by significant percentages of Grenache, while in Tavel and Lirac the grape is used to make...
