Campanian white wine seems to have become quite hip over the last couple years. There’s no shortage of critical acclaim, either-- in a recent podcast, a panel of Master Sommeliers waxed lyrical about Fiano as one of the three most ageworthy white wines of Italy. Sabino Loffredo of Pietracupa is certainly one of the top producers of this variety, and in the classic DOC zone of Avellino he is indeed making wines that handsomely repay a little cellaring. A recently consumed (devoured) bottle of the 2010 vintage of this wine was showing beautifully. Intensely smoky, with almost chewy phenolics and ripping acidity, it was as if posh Premier Cru Chablis had ended up on the wrong side of the tracks and done some hard time. The 2012 is starting to hint at this greatness and will get even better. Awesome stuff.
