Staff Pick Notes

When customers ask me for value, we often end up in Portugal; when they ask me for a specifics, I often find myself holding this bottle. A mainstay in my father’s daily rotation of robust reds, Monte Velho satisfies like few other everyday table wines can. Made by one of Alentejo’s most storied producers, Herdade do Esporão, the wine overdelivers in its fresh and lifted black-fruited tones supported by subtle stemmy tannins. In the south coast of Massachusetts, an area with a large Portuguese immigrant population, you’d be hard-pressed to find a store or restaurant that doesn’t carry Monte Velho, and for good reason—it’s what the people want.

Literally translated as "green wine," it...
