Rueda Verdejo, Martinsancho - 2017

Item # 24960 750mL

Martinsancho. The name of a plot of 200 year old verdejo vines preserved as a political statement during the Franco era. Angel Rodriguez. Winegrower credited for preserving this indigenous Spanish varietal and honored by King Juan Carlos for his efforts. And the wine? It’s more than a piece of history; it’s herbaliciously crisp, medium textured with pear and mountain floral notes. Absolutely pair with all manner of fish or enjoy during cocktail hour out of doors.

Staff Pick Notes

My flight was delayed, then canceled. I caught a cab in a fury and cried as I made my way back over the bridge. I wiped my tears, calmed myself down then whispered: "You know what to do - Rueda Verdejo & Hawaiian Pizza." And that's just what I did. I ordered the pizza so it would arrive as I got home. Our paths crossing just in time. And then I opened a bottle of this Verdejo. The pair was perfect. It swaddled me in comfort and lulled me to sleep. Until I had to wake up to head back to LaGuardia. Tasting notes: Minerals galore! Medium bodied. Clean... kinda salty. Yellow pear, cantaloupe, a smidge of honey. An over all steal for $15.00.

Rueda

Located just east along the Duero River from the Ribera del Duero, this region is widely known for its delicious Verdejo based white wines. Often blended with Viura and Sauvignon Blanc, these wines can range from light, floral and crisp to richly textured and powerfully aromatic. For inexpensive quaffing wines - think summertime and ceviché - one need look no further.
