Tasting Notes

This vintage Champagne which went through extensive lees aging. Floral with structure and minerals marked distinctly by notes of meyer lemons and brioche. Fine mousse, tiny lively bubbles and a persistent finish make this a lovely bubbly to drink and enjoy, not just to toast with. Champagne Saint Chamant was established in 1930 by Pierre and Hélène Coquillette. Their son, Christian, took over the estate in 1950. Located in Épernay, the house’s unsigned, unassuming exterior in no way hints at its labyrinthine cellar, built in the early 19th century, which is a mile long — and lined with hundreds of thousands of carefully aging Champagne bottles.

Staff Pick Notes

St Chamant is a family owned champagne house founded in 1930 in the Grand Cru Village of Chouilly. It is currently run by Christian Coquillette, the son of the Founders. This is a textbook example of their house style. It is traditional; rich, vinous and elegant. Extended aging on the lees only serve to add weight and depth to the wine, already hitting 10 years old. It has all the tasting notes you would expect from pedigree like this; lemon drop, buttered croissant, and nougat all head towards a lengthy finish. This is the type of bottle that makes Astor Wines special; Half bottles of vintage Grower Champagne. For a bubbly geek like myself, this gets me excited. Not many people carry stuff like this.

These winemakers control every...

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking...
