Il Rosso di Casa IGT, Romagnoli - 2022

Item # 25596 750mL

An ideal house wine but so much more than what it sounds. Easy to drink, bright red plums mingle on a palate laced with faint tannins. Ideally suited for pizza and the gamut of pasta dishes.

Staff Pick Notes

One of the great values of Astor Wines and Spirits, this is my Ol' Reliable weekday red. Pizza? Yes. Spaghetti with Sunday gravy? Absolutely yes. Romagnoli is a banger. A simple red blend of Lacrima, Sangiovese, and Montepulciano this wine over-delivers for the pricepoint. Expect an orchard of cherry trees on the palate, and very subtle tannin. Aromas of red fruit and a slight mushroom quality tickle the nose. Is this the most complicated red wine in our store? Of course not, but for 10 dollars this absolutely beats out Two Buck Chuck. Drink with a frozen lasagna on a lazy Thursday night.

About the Producer

Cantina Romagnoli Contrada S. Maria del Fiore, Marches, Italy This wine comes from a small family business located in the Marches, the easternmost region in the central belt of Italy between Tuscany and Umbria along the Adriatic coast. The Romagnoli family settled in this hilly terrain in the 18th century near Contrada S. Maria del Fiore: “Saint Maria of the Flowers.” There in the municipality...

Glossary

Marches

This region lies on Italy’s Adriatic Coast, so much of its cuisine is seafood-based. Marches is best-known for its white wines. Verdicchio produced near the towns of Jesi and Matelica often has gently bitter notes and rich fruit, and is an excellent match for many seafood dishes. Red wines are produced here as well, with Sangiovese being the dominant red grape in the region. When blended with the local Montepulciano, it makes a wine called Rosso Piceno (mostly sangiovese) or Rosso Conero...

Montepulciano

This rugged red staple can be anything from a simply fruited, easy-drinking wine to a serious, more structured offering, complete with all the depth and earthiness that can come from old-vine fruit and ideally placed vineyards. Montepulciano d'Abruzzi is produced in the region of Abruzzi from the Montepulciano grape, and is not to be confused with Tuscany’s Sangiovese-based Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Many of the modern incarnations of Abruzzi’s favorite red wine are bigger, more structured,...

Sangiovese

Italy's most planted grape variety is at the heart of some of the most beloved wines in the country. Grown all over the region, but especially in Central Italy, Sangiovese is the only grape allowed in Brunello di Montalcino, and the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti, and countless other delicious Italian blends. Sangiovese has shown itself in recent years to be an excellent complement to Cabernet Sauvignon in red Italian blends; this grape duo forms the basis of many of the...
