Tasting Notes

As Marsala gets old, it seems to become younger. This paradox declares the virtues of searching out older Marsala. A fantastic find for fans of older Madeira as well, this Sicilian Grillo presents a lighter palate, with a touch of bay leaf to counterpoint the dry, salted caramel profile. Tannins are light, and this is extraordinarily delicate overall. A lovely partner to fine cheeses, foie gras, and figs.Traditional fermentation in oak and chestnut barrels.

Staff Pick Notes

Have you ever smelled a wine so intensely aromatic that it makes your mouth water immediately? Do you want to know what it means when a wine "jumps out of the glass?" This Marsala is all that and more, but please don't use it for cooking; that would be a real shame. Marsala developed a skewed identity in the U.S. due to a mid-twentieth century quantity-over-quality production mentality and all of the cheap stuff used in kitchens, but this wine is truly special. The intrigue is so deep I'm compelled to come back for taste after taste. Saline, caramel, dried dates and figs, and citrus peel and nuts, along with time spent in chestnut and French oak barrels give this wine a genuinely unique complexity. Sweet, but balanced by its savory components, you'd be remiss not to try a bottle if you want a real flavor adventure.
