Corullón, Descendientes de J. Palacios - 2021

Item # 26737 750mL

In the Bierzo appellation, perched in the Northwest corner of Spain, ancient Mencía vineyards emerge from the steepest of hillsides. Deep cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by iron, smoked meat, and violet. Powerful red and dark berry flavors are braced by zesty minerality and gain sweetness with air. The red fruit takes the upper hand on the strikingly energetic finish, which leaves floral and Indian spice notes behind.

Staff Pick Notes

Here’s a wine from a previously unheralded region whose character drew the likes of Alvaro Palacios, the great Priorat winemaker and his nephew Ricardo Perez. They scoured the countryside of Spain and decided to set up their winery in the village of Corullon in the wine area of Bierzo. The grapes are farmed biodynamically and natural vinification methods are used. One whiff on the nose will reveal its intensity. The wine is very concentrated with notes of black cherry, cola, and crushed stones. A glorious match with charcuterie and ripe washed rind cheeses.

In 1990, he ultimately decided on Priorat, where he would achieve worldwide fame with “L’Ermita” and “Finca Dofi.” But there had been a close contender: Bierzo,...

In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...
