Faugères "Cuvée Tradition," Clos Fantine - 2019

Item # 27131 750mL

Exquisite quality drips from this tenuous Southern French blend. Carignan and Grenache dominate the blend on this wine of deep concentrated black berried fruit, crystalline stone acidity and sculpted tannins. A whiff of wild scrubbland herbs reinforce a Mediterranean feeling in this wine meant for a feast. Clos Fantine is a domain run by two sisters. They vinify their wines by parcel, feeding the grapes whole cluster into large concrete vats. the wine matures 18 months.

Staff Pick Notes

That first immediate hit of allspice and nutmeg emanating from the glass signals that this is a classic expression of Mediterranean-inflected wine. A blend of the traditional grape varieties of the Languedoc – Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre – this wine is rich and dense from the first sip, and yet it somehow deftly manages to be juicy and refreshing. Aged in concrete for 18 months, it is also unoaked; the choice not to use oak delivers clean, youthful flavors, while the acidity is vibrant enough to counter the richness of the extract and the higher level of alcohol. Primary notes of plump, sweet cherry quickly cede to flavors of cured black olives, minerals, and dried figs. Overall, well balanced and delightful. I do recommend slightly cooling this wine for a few minutes before serving.

Grenache

The Grenache grape (a.k.a. Grenache Noir) produces relatively pale, fruity red wines that often stop just short of sweetness. Grenache is familiar to most wine drinkers as an ingredient in the blends of the Rhône and Languedoc-Roussillon, where it can add charm to varieties that are a little rougher around the edges. The distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations are both characterized by significant percentages of Grenache, while in Tavel and Lirac the grape is used to make...

Carignan

Grown all over Europe and the Americas, Carignan (a.k.a. Carignane, Carignano, and Cariñena) is seldom seen as a 100% varietal wine. Many appellations of Languedoc-Roussillon must include a certain percentage of Carignan, but it is rarely the dominant grape in these blends. For years, this naturally high-yielding grape suffered from overproduction, but New World winemakers have lately taken up the Carignan cause and produced some distinctive and delicious examples. Now that it is subject to...
