Ribolla Nera, Ronchi di Cialla - 2020

Item # 27165 750mL

Ribolla Nera is a synonym for Schioppettino, an indigenous Italian grape known for making light, peppery wines. Ronchi di Cialla's Ribolla Nera is a benchmark wine; it is always a fine example of the best that Colli Orientali has to offer. A dry, elegant palate of light black cherry, sprinkled over with black and pink peppercorns and roughened up with charcoal tannins, will bring a smile to your face. An easy choice for fans of all the unique, food-friendly varieties Italy has to offer. Serve with roasted poultry or fried fish (especially cod) with peppers and onions. This wine was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel; 15-20% of the must was then matured in barrel for 12-18 months. The wine rested in bottle for one year before release.

Staff Pick Notes

In 1970, Paolo and Dina Rapuzzi founded the Ronchi di Cialla vineyard to cultivate indigenous Friulian grapes. However, a bureaucratic hiccup made it illegal to grow the Schioppettino grape due to the thought that it was extinct. With diligence and perseverance from the Rapuzzis, in 1989, the Schioppettino grape was finally recognized as a DOC Colli Orientali del Friuli grape. Thank God! This Ribolla Nero (100% Schioppettino) is an absolute gem. Aromatic with an olfactory conclusion of fresh black cherry, ripe blueberry and tart blackberry and plum. With wonderful contrasting savory notes of black pepper, game, and crushed granite. Tart red cherry and raspberry on the palate with a melody of peppercorn and savoriness on the finish. Syrah drinkers pay attention! Pair with Memphis-style ribs with a black pepper and fennel rub.

About the Producer

Undine, Friuli, Italy This historical Friulian Estate is strictly a family business. While Dina and Paolo Rapuzzi, who founded it in 1970, were attached by wine growing, their children Pierpaolo and Ivan belong to a generation that "grew up with vines". The policy of the estate was from the beginning to work only with indigenous varieties, such as Ribolla, Refosco, Schioppettino, Verduzzo and...

Glossary

Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Famous for its fascinating and unusual white wines, this region is home to many avant-garde winemakers (such as Gravner and Vie di Romans) who have expanded their repertoire of winemaking styles to include both the most modern, stainless-steel and barrique-influenced wines, to über-traditional wines with long maceration periods, fermented in clay amphorae. The grape that benefits most from the latter of these unusual and ancient techniques is the white varietal, Ribola Gialla, which yields...
