Cornalin was the first red grape planted in the Valais region and is characterized by power and elegance, with dark fruit and deep purple color, a wine that asks to be paired with gamey grilled meats and Alpine cheeses. Cave du Vieux-Moulin is a 4 hectare domain centered in the heart of Valais. Romain Papilloud took over from his parents in 1986. The steep slopes of the vineyards require intense manual labor throughout the growing season and through the harvest, which fits in nicely with the minimal-intervention approach to the entire production at the estate.

Cornalin is a natural cross between Petit Rouge and Mayolet, two varieties originating across the border in the Valle d'Aosta region of Italy. It is one of the hallmark red varieties in the Valais, and unlike money, is a tangible Swiss treasure to enjoy and savor. Remarkably structured and inky for such a high altitude, this is a prime example from Romain Papilloud of Cave du Vieux-Moulin. The small estate turns out amazing wines, hand-harvested from the steep slopes of the Valais. This Canton joined the Confederation only about 200 years ago, and brings its winemaking traditions to the lucky Swiss. If you are a wine nerd like me this is pure gold. It is excellent, surprising, and from an area that the Rhône river flows through!
